First Day... Check!

So today has been quite a day. I got on my flight at 9 o'clock Eastern time and arrived in London at 9AM (4AM my time). I didn't get much sleep because...
A. I can't sleep on planes
B. The entertainment was intense. I watched 5 episodes of Modern Family, The Help, and Water for Elephants and read some in my book, Heaven is For Real (you really must read this if you haven't yet).
C. The guy next to me smelled of Indian food and b.o. and was snoring loudly and practically resting his head on my shoulder the whole time. Trust me it was as pleasant as it sounds.
D. I was sweating profusely (and ask anyone, I neversweat) because I had on a long sleeve shirt, patagonia, and pink overcoat to save money. Turns out it wasn't necessary because I paid for the extra bag anyway. 5 pounds overweight, really?
Finally I arrived in London and met with Harriet, our CEA director. She called a cab and I was unloaded right at my door which is in an incredible location. I was too tired to function, so I wrapped myself in my coats and napped for about an hour and a half. Then my roommate, Gabby walked in. She is from Chicago and studies at DePaul University. We got our room relatively organized and I found some pretty ghetto bedding. It looks like bathroom wallpaper. Have a look yourself!

My little set up in the room. Please notice the Lilly Calendar so I have a bit of my old room with me! I also still need to go get some hangers..

So after some unpacking was done, we took on London! We made our first successful trip to Waitrose, a London supermarket, to get some food for the week. British food is very different from American food but same general concept. Definitely no large frozen food section (drat) and things were packaged in smaller quantities. I needed to find some paper plates and plastic silverware (being the eco-conscious person I am) and contemplated asking the worker where they were in a British accent to see if I could fool him. I decided against it and was glad because apparently the Londoners don't really use those things. Guess I'll have to find some later. Then I just walked aimlessly around listening to everyone's English accents. I must say children with the accent have to be the cutest ever. I bought 20 pounds worth of food including: cereal, yogurt, bread, ham, cheese, apples, and detergent. A good purchase I think. I still need to get hangers, a blanket, a towel, and a hair dryer though...

Then we brought our groceries back and decided to have our first night in the
city in typical London tradition-dinner at a pub! It was called the Globe pub with the Sherlock Holmes bar.

It was pretty standard pub food, but no I did not get the fish and chips, cod doesn't really do it for me. We met two guys who are also in the CEA program who told us about this night club called The Egg (yes actually) that apparently lots of people are going to. My current dilemma is whether to go or catch up on some sleep in time for my orientation meeting tomorrow morning. I currently look like death, so I will probably opt for sleeping. Plenty of time for fun later I suspect. Tomorrow we are taking a walking tour of London as a group then going for the tea!

All in all a pretty successful first day.
Until next post,
Cheers!
